A Historical Tapestry

The Austrians, French, and even the Russians left their marks on Perast. Notably, Peter the Great of Russia, on Venice’s recommendation, sent the sons of noble families to Perast to be trained by the renowned mathematician and navigator Marko Martinović. Historical records indicate that in 1697 and 1698, 17 Russian princes sailed on Martinović’s ship as part of their training.
From its earliest days, Perast was oriented towards the sea and maritime activities. By 1336, the town had a shipyard that operated until 1813. Perast gained the status of a municipality in 1580, a status it held until 1950. The town reached its zenith in the 17th and 18th centuries, with a fleet of about a hundred ships sailing the world’s oceans. This maritime prowess is the reason behind Perast’s most monumental buildings.
The Magic of Twelve
The number twelve, long considered a magical number since Etruscan times, found its influence in Perast as well. The town was established by twelve noble families, known locally as “kazade.” These families played a crucial role in shaping the town’s cultural and architectural heritage. Their legacy is visible in the numerous baroque palaces and sacred buildings they left behind.
Rich Sacred Heritage
Perast is dotted with numerous churches, each telling a story of its own. The main city church, St. Nicholas, built in the early 17th century, features a modest exterior but boasts a richly decorated interior. The church’s bell tower, standing at 55 meters, was brought from Venice in 1691. Visitors can climb the tower for a breathtaking view of Perast and the surrounding bay, with an entrance fee of just two euros. The tower is open from May to October.
Other notable churches include St. Anne’s Church, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Each of these sacred sites reflects the deep spiritual history embedded in Perast.
The Enchanting Islands
Perast is perhaps most famous for its two picturesque islands: Sveti Đorđe (St. George) and Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks). These islands are iconic symbols of the town and hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Sveti Đorđe is home to a Benedictine monastery and an old cemetery, though it is only accessible through private tours. Its serene and somewhat mysterious atmosphere adds to its allure.
Gospa od Škrpjela is an artificial island with a fascinating legend. According to local lore, two sailors from Perast found an icon of the Virgin Mary on a reef in 1452, which healed one of them. In gratitude, they began creating the island by sinking old ships loaded with rocks. This tradition continues today with the annual Fašinada event on July 22nd, where locals in decorated boats throw stones around the island to maintain its structure.
